Rapper, songwriter, and producer, Malcolm McCormick, better known as Mac Miller is said to have passed away on September 7th, 2018 due to an apparent drug overdose. Yesterday afternoon police were called to his San Fernando Valley home after a call placed by an unidentified male. At just 26 years old, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

\As a teenager, the Pittsburgh native, Mac Miller began his music career by releasing multiple mixtapes prior to his debut albumBlue Slide Park which became the first solo album to hit the Billboard charts in over 16 years. He was originally known as EZ Mac but changed his name before signing to Rostrum Records in 2010.

Benjy Grinberg, president of Rostrum Records took interest in Miller during the creation of his K.I.D.S mixtape which leads to his first major breakthrough, he hit the road for the first time on the Incredibly Dope Tour towards the end of 2010 and sold out every venue on the lineup. He went on to win two awards at the Pittsburgh Hip Hop Awards that same year.

Mac Miller released the mixtape Best Day Ever prior his debut album. The songs ‘Wear My Hat’ and ‘All Around The World’ brought major attention for the young emcee. In 2011, Blue Slide Park debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 selling 144,000 copies within the first week of the release. This album was the first independently debuted album to do this since 1995.

The subject matter of Mac Miller’s music began taking a darker turn with the Macadelic mixtape. On the project, he addressed his battles with drug addiction, and mental health in a very eclectic, caliginous manor. The tape included appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Cam’ron, Juicy J, and more. The subject of his inner battles remained prominent throughout the rest of the music he put out through his career.

In 2014, Mac Miller reported that he was no longer signed with Rostrum Records and then went on to sign with Warner Bros. for a reported $10 million. Through the label, he released his tenth mixtape ‘Faces’. Following major success with the first season on MTV 2, season two of reality show ‘Mac Miller and The Most Dope Family’ also aired that same year. In 2015, he released the album GO:OD AM. The year after that, his fourth album The Divine Feminine was also released.

In August Mac Miller released his fifth studio album Swimming. The body of work followed his breakup with singer and longtime girlfriend, Ariana Grande. Grande had previously stated that his drug abuse was scary to her and that it took a toll on their relationship. The new album includes heartfelt melodies that vividly paint the picture of pain, and harsh realities the rapper battled. He was scheduled to go on tour for the album in October.

It has been a sad year in hip-hop losing major artists such as this one. Mac Miller’s influence will live on in music forever. Prayers and condolences to all his family, friends, and fans as time moves forward. He will be missed dearly, and remain in the hearts of millions. May he Rest In Peace.
